APPLICATIONS
The use of metabolomics in drug discovery and development has become more common. Metabolites routinely serve as target engagement biomarkers or pharmacodynamic markers that provide a detailed molecular readout of small- and macro-molecule behavior in disease models. In other metabolomics applications in drug discovery, longitudinal or cross-sectional characterization of disease models with metabolomics and integrative omics can reliably point researchers to novel targets in an unbiased way, and these can be validated by following up with CRISPR, small molecule leads, or other target perturbation methods – both in vitro and in vivo.
